Essex and Wales collide as Gavin and Stacey fall in love, bringing their friends, family and luggage with them. With the exception of the first series, which was filmed on location in London, the entire series was filmed in Wales, including the scenes that take place in the film. Essex. The house that the Shipmans’ (Gavin’s family) house is in the village of Dinas Powys, 1 mile northwest of Barry, where the Wests (Stacey’s family) live. In series 3, both Bryn and Gavin’s car numbers are completely different from previous series. Gavin’s blue Saxo T-reg (MY 1999) has been changed to an X-reg (MY 2000). Bryn’s green Picasso has been changed from CV02 (MY 2002, registered in Cardiff) to HV54 (MY 2004, registered in Portsmouth). They are clearly different cars. Gavin & Stacey: Outtakes (2007). It’s nothing mind-blowing, it’s not mountain-moving, it’s not paradigm-shifting. Rather, it’s a character study of two (extended) families, one from Wales, the other from England, who come together after a couple’s relationship and marriage. It’s simple, fun, and friendly class. I wish there were more shows like this around where the characters are kind-hearted, loving, community-minded, and despite their faults, think and express their love for people. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s not contrived either. It’s an honest slice of life, and it’s beautiful. It’s not the laugh-out-loud comedy that British sitcoms often are. It’s more driven by the characters.
